How to Be Perfect

Well not really.

Perfection is a myth.

Perhaps it is something we have always been taught to strive for?

How does one define perfect?

perfection

verb
verb: perfect; pərˈfekt/
  1. 1.
make (something) completely free from faults or defects, or as close to such a condition as possible.

It’s important to recognize we live on a planet of individuals. They have built their own ideas of perfection that have been shaped by all the things in and around their world that they have been exposed to. Ultimately this shapes their beliefs about themselves and the ideas of attaining perfection.

If we compare “perfect” to what we read in the dictionary, (*light bulb moment*) it’s conclusive that the definition is open to interpretation per each individual perspective.untitled

For example in my mind, people who are 5’ 3” and taller, well they are tall. Some may disagree with me, but that’s my perception. Hey I am 5’, if I have to look up to communicate with you, then your tall!

Okay so now you know what I mean by perspective… let’s get back to perfect.

I can think back to times in my youth (ages 10 – 29) that I didn’t take chances on great opportunities, because I thought others looked better and did things better than me. In my mind they were perfect, I was not.

If I put myself out there then others figure it out, hey Ellie is not perfect? What does she think she is doing?

Our fear of others judgment plus our perceived imperfection(s) can rob us of opportunities, growth, connections, relationships with others and so much more.

If I am being completely honest, I still get that feeling now and then; I just push past it (negative self-talk is not welcome in my brain).

How do I do it?  I remind myself what I accomplished and achieved every time I did something that invoked fear of other’s negative judgment and exposure of my “imperfections.”

Here is a list of a few of the personal triumphs that never would have happened had I let the need to be perfect prevent me from moving forward and taking a chance:

          • Married to my best friend (I was afraid of marriage – yes really).
          • University professor in the field I am so passionate about: Communication.
          • Fitness instructor (my dream jobby (job+hobby) that fits my healthy lifestyle and brings me so much joy).
          • Fitness video lead and talent (featured in my soul-mate workouts: Turbo Kick, PiYo and Hustle).
          • Writer for newspapers and magazine with hundreds of published articles (In 1993, I was told that less than 10% of journalism majors would actually end up in that field to not bother trying – I sent out more than 100 resumes with clips/samples for a year until I got my foot in the door).
          • Communication and motivational speaker and private speech coach.
          • Author (In process – ETA 2015)

No one starts out perfect, but we should strive to be the best we can be. Not for anyone else, but for ourselves.

Today’s blog was actually going to be about procrastination. However, a couple days ago, I was inspired by the fearless act of someone I have admired since I became a fitness instructor 12+ years ago: Lori Mckee.

Lori M

Lori is a personal trainer, master instructor, master trainer, healthy lifestyle icon, and more. She is a wonderful friend and confidant who is going to motivate and rock this world on a huge scale!

Once you watch this you will be truly enlightened to face your fears and fight ideals of perfection!

At the end of the day we share a common goal to make a difference and help others achieve success, health and happiness. In order to this we must consistently work on ourselves so we can guide others; not to be perfect, but to be the best version of themselves that they can be.65d1b21fdea2d8079f895392c0b30d35
